Montana PBS’s new documentary, Clearing the Smoke, reveals how cannabis
acts on the brain and in the body to treat nausea, pain, epilepsy and
potentially even cancer. Extensive interviews with patients, doctors,
researchers and skeptics detail the promises and the limitations of
medicinal cannabis.
The cancer-killing properties of marijuana were the subject of
discussion in a PBS documentary that aired this week to little media
fanfare.
While using marijuana to kill cancer may sound like a wild claim to
some, it struck Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti as a great idea. In his studies
as professor of pathology and microbiology for the University of South
Carolina, he tested synthetic cannabis drugs on cancer cells and
developed a formula that was able to completely eradicate cancer cells
in a test tube.
A follow-up on mice afflicted with cancer found that up to 30 percent in
the test group completely rejected their disease, while others had
their tumors significantly reduced. The same drug is now being tested on
humans with Leukemia.
But it’s not just Dr. Nagarkatti who sees the medical value of
marijuana: it’s the whole pharmaceutical industry. And that’s another
point the documentary makes, examining the patents various companies
have filed, and what they claim marijuana-based drugs could one day be
used to treat.

Experts warn of danger that the
new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza
could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing
millions of people.
Senior scientists have criticized the
“appalling irresponsibility” of researchers in China who have
deliberately created new strains of influenza virus in a veterinary
laboratory.
They warned there is a danger that the
new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza
could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing
millions of people.
Lord May of Oxford, a former government
chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the
study published today in the journal Science as doing nothing to further
the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.
“They claim they are doing this to help
develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are
driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” Lord May
told The Independent.
“The record of containment in labs like
this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create
human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It’s appallingly
irresponsible,” he said.
The controversial study into viral mixing
was carried out by a team led by Professor Hualan Chen, director of
China’s National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory at Harbin
Veterinary Research Institute.
Professor Chen and her colleagues
deliberately mixed the H5N1 bird-flu virus, which is highly lethal but
not easily transmitted between people, with a 2009 strain of H1N1 flu
virus, which is very infectious to humans.
When flu viruses come together by
infecting the same cell they can swap genetic material and produce
“hybrids” through the re-assortment of genes. The researchers were
trying to emulate what happens in nature when animals such as pigs are
co-infected with two different strains of virus, Professor Chen said.
“The studies demonstrated that H5N1
viruses have the potential to acquire mammalian transmissibility by
re-assortment with the human influenza viruses,” Professor Chen said in
an email.
“This tells us that high attention should
be paid to monitor the emergence of such mammalian-transmissible virus
in nature to prevent a possible pandemic caused by H5N1 virus,” she
said.
“It is difficult to say how easy this
will happen, but since the H5N1 and 2009/H1N1 viruses are widely
existing in nature, they may have a chance to re-assort,” she added.
The study, which was carried out in a
laboratory with the second highest security level to prevent accidental
escape, resulted in 127 different viral hybrids between H5N1 and H1N1,
five of which were able to pass by airborne transmission between
laboratory guinea pigs.
Professor Simon Wain-Hobson, an eminent
virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, said it is very likely
that some or all of these hybrids could pass easily between humans and
possess some or all of the highly lethal characteristics of H5N1
bird-flu.
“Nobody can extrapolate to humans except
to conclude that the five viruses would probably transmit reasonable
well between humans,” Professor Wain-Hobson said.
“We don’t know the pathogenicity
[lethality] in man and hopefully we will never know. But if the case
fatality rate was between 0.1 and 20 per cent, and a pandemic affected
500 million people, you could estimate anything between 500,000 and 100
million deaths,” he said.
“It’s a fabulous piece of virology by the
Chinese group and it’s very impressive, but they haven’t been thinking
clearly about what they are doing. It’s very worrying,” Professor
Wain-Hobson said.
“The virological basis of this work is
not strong. It is of no use for vaccine development and the benefit in
terms of surveillance for new flu viruses is oversold,” he added.
An increasing number of scientists
outside the influenza field have expressed concern over attempts to
deliberately increase the human transmissibility of the H5N1 bird-flu
virus. This is done by mutating the virus so that it can pass by
airborne droplets between laboratory ferrets, the standard “animal
model” of human influenza.
Two previous studies, by Ron Fouchier of
Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, caused uproar in 2011 when it emerged
that they had created airborne versions of H5N1 that could be passed
between ferrets.
The criticism led to researchers to
impose a voluntary moratorium on their H5N1 research, banning
transmission studies using ferrets. However they decided to lift the ban
earlier this year, arguing that they have now consulted widely with
health organisations and the public over safety concerns.
However, other scientists have criticized the decision to lift the moratorium.

Three new suspects in the Boston Marathon
bombing case have been taken into custody, the city’s police department
announced Wednesday morning.
From their official Twitter account, the
Boston Police Department confirmed just after 11 a.m. local time that
three suspects have been detained by authorities in regards to the
terrorist attack earlier this month.
According to a police source speaking anonymously with the Boston Globe,
the three latest suspects are area college students who attended the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the
19-year-old accused bomber who could face the death penalty of convinced
for his alleged role in the marathon bombing. A source speaking to NBC
alleged that the suspects were all roommates of Tsarnaev at
UMass-Dartmouth, although police have failed to confirm this report.
Nineteen-year-old University of
Massachusetts-Dartmouth college students Azamat Tazhayakov, Dias
Kadyrbayev and Robel Phillipos have been accused of interfering with a
federal probe into the April 15, 2013 terrorist attack at the Boston
Marathon.
Authorities unsealed a criminal complaint
against the men Wednesday afternoon and they were arraigned during 3:30
p.m. hearing in a Massachusetts courthouse. The Boston Globe reported
that attorneys for the men waived bail and will remain in detention
until arguments begin later this month.
Investigators say the three students were
classmates of suspected bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, also 19, and
attempted to hinder an investigation by destroying evidence they
uncovered from his UMass-Dartmouth dormitory room three days after the
marathon bombing.
“All three have admitted on that on
the evening of April 18, 2013, they removed Tsarnaev’s backpack from
Tsarnaev’s dormitory room,” reads the complaint. Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov, both Kazakhstan nationals, “have
admitted that they agreed to get rid of it after concluding from news
reports that Tsarnaev was one of the Boston Marathon bombers,” it continues.
The two Kazakhstan citizens were in the
US on student visas and were apprehended by authorities over a week ago
for alleged immigration violations; they have been accused of hiding
evidence. Authorities have identified Phillipos as a US citizen who was
also enrolled at Dartmouth and he is accused of making false statements
to the FBI.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation complaint unsealed this week, the three students first considered their classmate as a possible suspect in the bombing after the FBI released images on April 18 of two men sought in connection to the blasts. Authorities later identified the two men as ethnic Chechens: Dzhokhar and his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Approximately four hours after photos of the Tsarnaev brothers first began to be widely circulated on the afternoon of April 18, the FBI says Phillipos told Kadyrbayev to put on the news when he got home “because one of the suspects in the Marathon bombing suspect looked familiar. Once he turned on the TV, Kadyrbayev texted Tazhayakov’s cell phone to ask, “Have you seen the news?”
Shortly after, the complaint continues, Kadyrbayev, Tazhayakov and Phillipos went to Tsarnaev’s Dartmouth dorm room and were let in by a roommate. There they stayed for a considerable amount of time watching a movie and eventually made contact with the 19-year-old suspect.
A police source speaking to the Globe
said authorities believe two of the suspects may have helped he accused
bomber after the April 15 terrorist attack and are expected to be
charged with obstruction of justice and making false statements.
A detain police statement is still
forthcoming, but before 12 noon on Wednesday the department tweeted that
there is no threat to public safety at this time in regards to the
attack.
Tsarnaev was apprehended by police days
after the attack and has been charged with using a weapon of mass
destruction. His brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is also
believed to have detonated improvised explosives at the Boston Marathon
earlier this month but died days later after engaging in a gun fight
with police. Three people and more than 260 were injured during the
April 15 tragedy.

A tank containing oil products at the Marathon Detroit Refinery has
reportedly exploded, forcing a mandatory evacuation order for a nearby
area. No injuries have been reported so far.
The fire is located in one of the refinery’s smaller tanks, Marathon spokesman Shane Pochard has told the Detroit Free Press.
Marathon’s own fire crew are battling the flames, along with first responders from Detroit and surrounding areas, Pochard said.
Firefighters at the scene say diesel fuel
in a tanker on Fort street is on fire. They have two trucks at the
scene streaming water and two trucks streaming foam.
It is unknown if anyone was injured or how the fire started, Pochard said.
~
A HazMat team from the Detroit Fire Department and Senior Fire Chief Carl Smith are at the scene.
Reports of the explosion came in just before 6 pm local time.
The adjacent city of Melvindale is ordering a partial evacuation due to concerns over air quality from the fire rise.
State police have closed ramps from I-75 to Schaefer in both directions.
“Police have blocked Fort Street off
by I-75 south … oh my goodness … there’s an ambulance out here, a
fireman standing outside, you know, it doesn’t look like they are trying
to get close. They are not trying to go in there,” one listener told the local radio station.
A witness, Dan Taylor told the Detroit News that “I saw the fire ball. The whole top of the tank was on fire and you could see it melted.”

A little-known plant with a truly bizarre name is now making headlines
as a cancer killer, with the compound of the plant vanishing tumors in
mice with pancreatic cancer. Known as the ‘thunder god vine’ or lei gong
teng, the Chinese plant is actually integrated into Chinese medicine
and has been used for ages in remedying a number of conditions
including rheumatoid arthritis.
According to the new research out of the
University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center, the thunder god plant
compound led to no signs of tumors after a 40 day period — even after
discontinuing the treatment. Published in the journal Science Translational Medicineand
funded by the National Institutes of Health, even the scientists
working on the project were stunned by the anti-cancer properties of the
compound. Known to contain something known as triptolide, which has
been identified as a cancer fighter in previous research, it is thought
to be the key component that may be responsible for the anti-tumor
capabilities.
Study leader and vice chairman of research at the Cancer Center explained to Bloomberg how he was blown away by the effects of the simple plant:
“This drug is just unbelievably potent in killing tumor cells,” he said.
And just like with numerous other powerful substances like turmeric and ginger, mainstream science is still slowly confirming what many traditional practitioners have known for their entire lives. This is, of course, due to the fact thatthere
is simply no money for major corporations in researching the healing
powers of natural herbs and compounds such as the compound found in the
thunder god vine. Turmeric and ginger, for example, have been found to
be amazing anti-cancer substances that are virtually free compared to
expensive and dangerous cancer drugs.
Nevertheless, the Big Pharma sponsored
corporate scientists have managed to ignore these spices as much as
possible. In fact, they have even been caught time
and time again faking thousands of studies to fraudulently demonstrate
the supposed value of pharmaceutical drugs pushed by major pharma
juggernauts — many of which are later forced to pay millions in fines
which only slightly stack up against their billions in profits.
Profits that are threatened by the many
real studies that were performed by scientists examining the
rejeuvenating power of cheap ingredients like turmeric, which has been
found by peer-reviewed research available on PubMed to positively
influence over 590 conditions.
While it is great news that this study is
bringing the beneficial effects of inexpensive and near-free plant
compounds to light, the bad news is that the individuals responsible for
the research are actually looking to create a pharmaceutical drug from
the essential component triptolide. A drug that will seek FDA approval
and ultimately be patented, nutritionally ruined, and sold
for exorbitant amounts of cash. Instead, just get your hands on some
thunder god vine for yourself.
It looks like another tragedy of massive proportions has hit America once again.
The damage is done. These photos are some
of the most gruesome ever recorded from any event, wartime or
otherwise. Now the big question is: who will be blamed?
Examine the evidence and then decide.
Readers and people who are concerned about the FACTS surrounding this
sensational incident in Boston, MA yesterday, should be able to make up
their own minds as to what they believe really happened, or more
importantly -what didn’t happen at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Smart
readers already know what national talking points are set to follow
this, what looks very much like a staged event. Hint: “Patriot’s Day’.
Patriot’s Day, historically on April 19th, also magically coincides with the Branch Davidiancompound slaughter at Waco, Texas, and the Oklahoma City bombing
(both are arguably federal government cover-ups), so it doesn’t take a
genius to guess that Eric Holder and the Department of Justice will be
running point on all the talking points related to this crime scene,
perhaps claiming that this week was some sort of ‘rallying cry’ for a radical right-wing anti-government group, or more likely – a lone gunman.
April 15 is also ‘Tax Day’, when federal income tax returns are due to be filed.
Looks like a perfectly scripted slam dunk for the DOJ, no?
The overseas terrorist narrative was
hinted at initially, with Richard DesLauriers, special agent in charge
of the FBI’s Boston Division stating:”We will go to the ends of the
Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this
despicable crime — and we will do everything we can to bring them to
justice,” but it does not appear obvious from the onset that ‘al Qaeda’ will
be used as the principle actor for this terror event – as we would’ve
already had reports of Korans, Arabs driving vans and Arab driving
licenses found at the scene of the explosions, and an obscure Arabic
website hosted from a proxy server out of India taking credit for the
attack. You can also probably rule out both North Korea, or Iran as Washington culprits. Nor will the DOJ be inquiring whether or not this event was in any way a ‘inside job’.They will most likely, in lock step with the White House, instead be focusing 100% on the new heightened threat of ‘domestic terrorists’ in the United States.
Also, look out for this talking point in the coming days: “the culprits may be domestic terrorists as Americans who have converted to Islam”.
Also expect that anyone questioning the
official government story of this incident will be accused of being
‘insensitive’, ‘un-American’, and of course, a wild ‘conspiracy
theorist’. This very debate on CNN, MSNBC and other major outlets will
at some point be pushing the issue of shutting down internet or social
media commentators who are calling this ‘an inside job’.
We strongly believe that in the aftermath
of this event, only one explanation, and only one narrative will be
accepted in public discourse regarding the Boston Bombing, and this will
be the official one. Expect the corporate media and the
federal government to come down hard on any objections this time – an
assertion which is based on the build-up to discrediting the alternative
media after the Sandy Hook event.
Watch to see if the complete cycle of this latest horror drama has actually been calculated from start to finish…
So… it’s time again to ramp-up US
domestic security and surveillance, give up more of your rights, and
don’t even think about touching the budgets of the DHS, TSA or the US military.
As the author rightly says below – it’s not a crime to ask questions…
Greg Fernandez Jr We R Change TV
(…) NBC News counter-terrorism analyst Micheal Leiter believes authorities will respond as if this is a terror attack.
Time and Date.com describes the background behind Patriot’s Day:
Prior to 1775, the area that is now
the eastern part of the United States mainly consisted of British
colonies controlled by the United Kingdom. The American Revolutionary
War, also known as the American War of Independence, was a major step in
the independence of the United States. The first battles in this war
were fought in the areas of Lexington and Concord, near Boston,
Massachusetts, on April 19, 1775.
For this reason, the third Monday in April is symbolic for the emerging independence of the new country.
Paul Revere is among the patriots who are
remembered on Patriot’s Day. The American silversmith is known for
spreading the word of the Boston Tea Party to New York and Philadelphia,
and for warning the Lexington Minutemen about the British invasion in
1775. The story of his “midnight” ride to Lexington to discuss action
plans against the British has been poeticized.
An act to amend the Tennessee code
regarding Patriot’s Day took effect in 2008. The state’s code now
officially includes the holiday and mentions that its governor proclaims
April 19 of each year as Patriot’s Day. This day is still not a public
holiday in Tennessee. Patriots’ Day is also known as Patriot’s Day and
Patriots Day.patriots day in Boston. There was also a Boston
Red Sox game nearby. There were at least 3 explosives found near the
Boston Marathon finish line.
There were also reports of several suspicious packages, as well as a“suspicious person” who
was denied entrance into the Boston Marathon five minutes before the
event began. The man is described as a black male, dressed in black with
a black backpack. After he was denied entrance he put on his black hood
and walked off with an I-Pod or a similar device.
More reports came in about the Penske
truck, and officers were advised to use caution if they found the truck.
There is a report of a hit-and-run around 5:13 pm (EDT), but no
connection is made to the bombing. Two more reports of suspicious
packages are mentioned later on, and there are reports of a suspicious
black backpack in a nearby CVS Pharmacy. Another camouflage backpack is
left at an “ER”.
At 5:22 pm (EDT) someone asks if there’s an update on the Penske truck.
“Be advised. We got a truck stopped in the middle of the common. We’re
taking people out of it. We’re trying to check with them. Anything
further on that Penske truck?”
“Negative,” dispatch replies. “Nothing further. Is this a Penske truck?”
Someone else comes on the line and asks
about the location of the officer at the Boston Common. Another voice
confirms the location, adding the officer is on the Charles Street side.
We then hear that someone is in-route to the Boston Common on south
Charles Street; presumably near Boylston Street.
Now I cannot be sure if the following
truck mentioned is the same truck on the south-side of Charles Street,
but here’s what is said. “That truck has been cleared by a bomb dog.
Apparently it’s a delivery van or a pick-up van, uh, just mysteriously
appeared. it has been secured. it is clean.” Watch the video and note
the tone in the officer’s voice.
Soon after that, we hear a request for an ambulance
needed at the Boston Common. “…can we have an ambulance… into the
common. Possible heart attack.” Dispatch informs the officer an
ambulance is already on its way.
There are many reports
of suspicious packages throughout the day on the Boston Police, Fire,
EMS live audio feed. Eventually it is believed that the suspect may be
posing as a victim in a hospital. The young male suspect allegedly had a
student-visa. I did catch one mention of a suspect detained on the live
feed, but a lot of what’s being said is radio-lingo, so it would be
nice to have some insight on the video below; I set my camera up to
catch the live audio feed. Perhaps there’s something I missed. Check it
out for yourself.
The Boston Globe tweeted police
will have controlled explosion on the 600 block of Boylston Street.”
This is after the first two explosions, when the police apparently
detonated an explosive device they found nearby. There appear to be many
explosive devices and suspicious packages found throughout the day in
Boston.
University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach Alastair Stevenson noticed something suspicious before the marathon that day. He told AL.com:
“At the starting line this morning,
they had bomb sniffing dogs and the bomb squad out there,” he said.
“They kept announcing to runners not to be alarmed, that they were
running a training exercise.” He added, “I’ve run a lot of races like
this one, but I never saw bomb dogs at the starting line of any running
event. It led me to believe that something like (a bomb detonation)
might have happened.”
BigPZone.com reported
“Boston marathon runner Alastair Stevenson says that as the explosions
erupted at the Boston Marathon this morning, he was told by police over
the loud speaker that the events were ‘just a drill’.”
Boston marathon
runner Alastair Stevenson says that as the explosions erupted at the
Boston Marathon this morning, he was told by police over the loud
speaker that the events were ‘just a drill’.
Stevenson, speaking with various news
sources at the event, told one Alabama publication about what he
witnessed during the race. While managing to finish the race before the
explosions were in range of him or his bystander wife, Stevenson
revealed some interesting information that makes sense of some Boston
Globe tweets from earlier regarding bomb drills — which had been going
on around the time of the actual explosions themselves and therefore may
have confused police and emergency response.
In the article, Stevenson is recorded as saying:
“They kept announcing to runners not to be alarmed, that they were running a training exercise.”
In fact, the eyewitness runner says that there were already a major presence of bomb sniffing dogs and even a bomb squad.
Runner Says ‘Bomb Sniffing Dogs, Bomb Squad Already On Scene Before Explosions’
Likely due to the perceived drill that
was set to go on right before the actual explosion in the same area,
the runner detailed how there was already a large presence of bomb
sniffing dogs and even a bomb squad right nearby beforethe
explosions hit. In fact, they had told the competitors and the fans that
it was simply a drill — until they realized that real people were being
injured and killed.
Civilian Cancer Deaths Expected to Skyrocket Following Radiological Incidents
The White House has given final approval
for dramatically raising permissible radioactive levels in drinking
water and soil following “radiological incidents,” such as nuclear
power-plant accidents and dirty bombs. The final version, slated for
Federal Register publication as soon as today, is a win for the nuclear
industry which seeks what its proponents call a “new normal” for
radiation exposure among the U.S population, according Public Employees
for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
Issued by the Environmental Protection
Agency, the radiation guides (called Protective Action Guides or PAGs)
allow cleanup many times more lax than anything EPA has ever before
accepted. These guides govern evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, food
restrictions and other actions following a wide range of “radiological
emergencies.” The Obama administration blocked a version of these PAGs
from going into effect during its first days in office. The version
given approval late last Friday is substantially similar to those
proposed under Bush but duck some of the most controversial aspects:
In soil, the PAGs allow long-term public
exposure to radiation in amounts as high as 2,000 millirems. This would,
in effect, increase a longstanding 1 in 10,000 person cancer rate to a
rate of 1 in 23 persons exposed over a 30-year period;
In water, the PAGs punt on an exact new standard and EPA “continues
to seek input on this.” But the thrust of the PAGs is to give on-site
authorities much greater “flexibility” in setting aside established
limits; and
Resolves an internal fight inside EPA between nuclear versus public
health specialists in favor of the former. The PAGs are the product of
Gina McCarthy, the assistant administrator for air and radiation whose
nomination to serve as EPA Administrator is taken up this week by the
Senate.
Despite the years-long internal fight, this is the first public
official display of these guides. This takes place as Japan grapples
with these same issues in the two years following its Fukushima nuclear
disaster.
“This is a public health policy only Dr.
Strangelove could embrace. If this typifies the environmental leadership
we can expect from Ms. McCarthy, then EPA is in for a long, dirty
slog,” stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch, noting that the EPA
package lacks a cogent rationale, is largely impenetrable and hinges on a
series of euphemistic “weasel words.”
“No compelling justification is offered
for increasing the cancer deaths of Americans innocently exposed to
corporate miscalculations several hundred-fold.”
Reportedly, the PAGs had been approved
last fall but their publication was held until after the presidential
election. The rationale for timing their release right before McCarthy’s
confirmation hearing is unclear.
Since the PAGs guide agency
decision-making and do not formally set standards or repeal statutory
requirements, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and Superfund, they
will go into full effect following a short public comment period.
Nonetheless, the PAGs will likely determine what actions take place on
the ground in the days, weeks, months and, in some cases, years
following a radiological emergency.
